Designs by Mikel Giveaway

Designs by Mikel is an AMAZING shoppe driven by the creativity of Mikel [did you guess that?]. She makes seriously gorgeous pieces, and has a lot of her own heart in each one. Here is a little more about her...

I have been an artist as long as I can remember. Art has always been away for me to express myself in ways that words never totally could. Thankfully, I was raised in a home where my mother encouraged my creativity. From there, I got a BA in Fine Art and Graphics, and am one math class short of an architectural engineering degree. I love to paint, draw, sew, crochet, bead, create pottery, and Photoshop. I have written many tutorials which were published online for several years. About anything I create these days has 15 to 20 years experience behind it. I am waiting to really find my muse, at the moment, jewelry, crochet, and sewing have taken a forefront.

I have been a single mother much of my life, and it’s been a necessity to pursue avenues of income that were stable. I have been a graphic designer, interior designer and I think my most favorite, flight attendant. As far as where I am from, I definitely am a gypsy. My great, great grandfather founded Woods Cross so my family’s base is the Salt Lake Valley. I live with my wonderfully romantic and sweet husband and my yellow lab Tessa. My daughter is married and in school. Health issues have recently forced me to be on a medical leave from work. This has presented a unique time in my life. Time I have never had before. Time for me. J And yes... it still feels a little selfish.

I am on a journey to create! I want to inspire and help others create. It is a time for me to bond with other women, make new friends, and celebrate life. I am enjoying getting to know so many wonderful people who have shoppes on etsy, or sell at boutiques. I am amazed and inspired by the business sense and the talent! I definitely am the shy, introverted artist type, but working on expanding my personality because sometimes it has kept me from leaping when I am inspired.

It is my prayer that all women know how beautiful they are! I think it can be easy to sell ourselves short and forget truly how much we all have to give.

Designs by Mikel also makes these amazing cuffs for women’s empowerment. 20% of each sale goes to the Rape Recovery Center. What better way to spend your money than to help other women, and get a gorgeous cuff at the same time?

Pirate’s Booty Review

Ahoy, mateys! Allow me to introduce ye to a new snack, ARRRR. Pirate’s Booty is this super creative company that makes all natural, baked snacks that are good for you, and taste good! Awesome. They are trans-fat and gluten-free, low in calories, and have less fat than potato chips. Sounds great, right?

Just in case you guys didn’t know yet, I like pirates. I liked the concept of pirates even before the beautiful Jack Sparrow graced the big screen. I love the skull and crossbones symbol and all. Pirate’s Booty is possibly the funnest company ever, because not only is their company covered in pirate graphic, but they sent me samples in a treasure chest! Plus, they included a note that was full of pirate jargon. How cool of a company is that?!

I absolutely love the Pirate’s Booty snacks. I took them down to the sand dunes with us, and all of the guys tried them and loved them as well. I didn’t let them know that they are healthy snacks, so that could help. :) Everyone that tried them was asking where they could buy them, because they are so yummy! My very favorite flavor? The Bermuda Onion. They are fantastic. But to be honest, they were all pretty freaking fabulous. Go get yourself some Pirate’s Booty, ye skalliwag!

Bad to the Last Drop Review

When Joe, a regular at the town’s coffee house The Black Cat, goes missing and is later found dead, the regulars at The Black Cat – Joe’s “family” – are understandably upset. But when it’s discovered that Joe might have been killed, the town is rocked to its core. Best friends Deb Lindberg and Pat Kerry take it upon themselves to help solve what becomes increasingly evident is Joe’s murder. Deb’s background as an attorney and Pat’s background as a minister serve them in good stead as they seek to not only unravel the mystery of Joe’s death but also to uncover the many secrets of his past, all in an attempt to help his Russian-born sisters, who arrive unexpectedly in Ashland, looking for Joe.

Thanks to Langdon Street Press, I was able to get a reviewer’s copy of Bad to the Last Drop. This book was a lot of fun to read! It’s really interesting and you find yourself needing to know more about the center of the book, Joe. Plus, I’ve NEVER had a prologue draw me into the story as well as this one did! It basically tells you about what happens after the murder, from the murderer’s point of view, without telling you who did it. Which makes the story that much more intriguing. I seriously enjoyed this book so much. If you are looking for a murder mystery, but not something super serious, I highly recommend Bad to the Last Drop.

Bad to the Last Drop is scheduled for release in November. Look for a giveaway to celebrate the release later on!

GreenSmart Review and Giveaway

GreenSmart is the creator of a product called Neogreene – it’s like neoprene [the wetsuit material], but without odors or any harmful toxins, and it uses less energy to produce. Super cool! They make laptop sleeves and bags, briefcases, and water bottle totes; all of which are eco-friendly. Plus, they take plastic bottles [think 20 oz. or 2 liter Pepsi] and turn them into the fabric used to make their products. So, not only are they eco-friendly and use non-toxic materials, but they are reducing the impact on our landfills! What a great company.

I got to review a water bottle and tote combo from GreenSmart. The water bottle is pretty much your basic reusable water bottle, but the Husband loves the fact that the lid is green. He’s on a green kick right now. I really like that it lists the amount of water it will hold. I am trying to drink more water [I don’t particularly like water] and knowing how much I am drinking is a big help to make sure I’m getting enough. A lot of the reusable water bottles don’t tell you what size they are! And the tote – the water bottle tote is awesome. It’s got the little carabineer thing on it so you can hook it to just about anything [great for runners!] and it’s soft and squishy, so it’s easy to hold onto. Plus, they are super duper insulators so they will keep your drink cold, or hot, for longer. And, you can put it on pretty much any water bottle you've got. I dig it!

Buy it!

Peeled Snacks Review

Peeled Snacks makes snacks, that are peeled. Weird, eh? They offer fruit and nuts, unprocessed. No added sugar or fat, no oil, no preservatives. Just plain yummy [and healthy!] snacks.

I got to try Peeled Snacks’ line of Fruit Picks, and I LOVE them. Seriously, love. It’s that great of a connection between the fruit and me. I’m really picky about dried fruit because sometimes, the texture is just icky. It’s either too hard, or too squishy, and I can’t eat it. But I really enjoyed their dried fruit! The banana was the biggest surprise to me. I opened that one first, totally expecting to hate it because I hate pretty much all dried bananas out there. Not the case here! Their bananas are still pretty moist, without being smooshy [yes, that’s a word… in my world]. Plus, they taste like bananas! Wow! I liked them. Then we moved onto the apricots, then the apples, then the cherries, then the pineapple, and finally the mango. I tried them in the order I thought I would like them, from least to most. But seriously, I like them all. My absolute favorite would have to be the mango, but I wouldn’t NOT eat any of the snacks! I plan to hit my local health food store to find out if they carry Peeled Snacks, and if not, I’ll be suggesting it to the manager. I like them that much.

Buy it!

Zestra Review and Giveaway

**WARNING** Some may consider parts of this post ADULT CONTENT. I won’t be using any pictures or any inappropriate language, but what I’m talking about is for Bigs [mommies/daddies] to enjoy together; NOT the littles. Thanks!

Zestra makes one product and one product only. It’s an arousal oil especially made for women [finally!], made to help you feel more. Pretty simple, right? Only, it’s simple with an AMAZING result. :) Zestra is safe, hormone-free, has no known interactions with drugs, and works pretty quickly [like, within minutes]. Basically, you can feel safe trying it!

I’m not going to go into detail; all I need to tell you is to try it. I don’t care if you’re plenty happy with your life in the bedroom, trying this will change your world. It’s good, and you need it. 70% of women said they felt more when using Zestra. So, use it. They don’t call it the "Zestra Rush" for nothing!

**UPDATE**12/12**
Wow! Christmas seems to have come early for the people at Zestra! They were featured in the New York Times, in a story called "Women Search for Their Own Elixir of Love" about menopausal and post-menopausal women searching for something that will help them keep up with their Viagra-enhanced partners. Women and physicians interviewed for the piece highlighted Zestra as a successful option for many women who are not ready to throw in the towel on intimacy. How cool for them, eh?

Country Bob’s Review and Giveaway

Country Bob is a man who started Country Bob’s, a company that makes some great sauce! Here is a little about them, from their site:

In 1968 Country Bob perfected the sauce of his dreams. After years of giving the sauce to friends and family he began to sell it in 1977. The reaction was overwhelming just as it is today. Almost everyone who tries Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce becomes a lifelong user. And why not, it is the perfect complement to practically any meal set on your table.

I got to review the Country Bob's original, all-purpose sauce. It’s basically your go-to sauce for anything! I used mine on burgers and steak, but they say it can be used for a dipping sauce for anything and everything. It’s pretty much what I expected from a steak sauce – it’s got a little spice, a little tang, and a little sweet. It tastes similar to another popular steak sauce, but it’s got more sweet and a little more… hickory?… in it, which makes me like this more! I made burgers last night, and made more patties than we had buns for. So I ate my burger without a bun, and just dipped it in this sauce, and it was fabulous. The Husband doesn’t like steak sauce [yah, I know, who doesn’t like steak sauce?] and so wasn’t a big fan, but I like steak sauce, and I really like this sauce.

Buy it!
You can purchase any of the great items from Country Bob’s, and also find retail locations, not to mention some great recipes, by clicking here.

Have You Been To Durham County?

Have you ever dreamed that Desperate Housewives would breed with Law and Order, creating possibly the best show on TV? Well, meet Durham County!

Durham County is a new show on the ION channel [their first original series!]. It's about a detective who moves to a quiet neighborhood after his partner is killed and his wife is diagnosed with breast cancer. After they move in, Sweeney [the detective] realizes his new neighbor might just be a serial killer. I know it's not just me; this show sounds awesome! Right up my alley.

Not only does the show sound great, but they have a really fun 'microsite' to go along with it! In the site, you can wander around the neighborhood and try to uncover secrets. Plus, you can upload your own secrets! I've been wasting time on it all morning. :)

I'm definitely going to try to catch this show. It is on Monday nights at 10pm/9pm Central [but check your local listings to be sure]. Have any of you managed to see the show? What did you think of it?

BookWorm Publishing Review and Giveaway

BookWorm Publishing is trying to help kids be better readers. Here is a little more about them, from their site.

Educators all agree that READING is the most valuable gift we can give our children. With that in mind, it is becoming increasingly hard for books to compete in today’s world.

Unfortunately, the value of reading plain old books has faded with the rise of technology- Video Games, iPods, and Cell Phones, just to name a few.

At Book-Worm-Store.Com, we know that reading builds vocabularies, tones writing skills, and prepares the mind to master every other subject in school. Therefore, it is important for us to provide creative ways for you to get a book or other reading materials into the hands of every child in your heart. Personalized books provide the means for us to keep our commitment to you.

Our mission is to provide Edu-tainment: the intersection of education and entertainment.

I got My Tea Party from BookWorm Publishing, personalized for Punk, to review. I was super excited to get it and I knew it was something she was going to love. Sure enough, I was right! These books are so cute and well done. You get to personalize the book with the child’s name, nickname, friends’ names, and where they live [or at least, I did for mine – I’m not sure if it’s the same for all of the books]. The very first thing Punk noticed was that her friends were in the book, which cracked me up because right on the first page it has her full name. But she ignored that and found the friends! LOL

I love how it not only makes the book about her, but it really makes it seem like it was written just for her, and I know she loves that. She took the time to show me who each bear was, and then told me all about what she thought the bears were going to do after their tea party. I know Punk enjoys the book, which makes me like it. So, I approve!

The Great Escape

This is a contest entry for those crazy folks at TodaysMama and Cricut [and I was also tagged by Von!]. Be sure to check out Cricut's cool new cartridges and the chance at $30,000 in travel for you and your friends at the Great Gypsy Escape site!

Great Escape Meme
1. If you could escape to anywhere in the world where would it be?
I really, really want to go to Australia and dive the reef.

2. What song do you play when you are by yourself in the car?
I am mostly in the car by myself! [Lucky me] It all depends on my mood. I've been digging Black Eyed Peas lately, but also NIN fills the car quite a bit. And Rise Against.

3. If you had a night to yourself, and money was no object, what would you do?
Oh man... could I spend the night driving a McLaren F1 through Europe? That sounds nice. But I would need all other drivers off the road so I could go as fast as I wanted to.

4. What is your guilty pleasure?
Hahahaha CUPCAKES!!! I am a total addict. Oh, and the Of Love shows. I can't help myself.

5. What is the farthest place you have traveled away from your home?
Sadly enough, only Texas.

6. Last book that you couldn't put down?
I got through the last Harry Potter book in a day.

7. When you want to escape into another time, what movie do you watch?
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. It doesn't get much more time-travelling than that!

8. What is your favorite local escape?
I love the aquarium, and Thanksgiving Point, and any cupcake place.

9. How do you escape on a budget?
I buy a cupcake [or three] and sit in my car with the music cranked and eat it [or them] all by myself. Or, I just take a bubble bath with the door locked.

10. Best food you've ever had while on vacation.
There's a place inside Disney's California Adventure that has the most amazing french onion soup! I crave it constantly. And the Mexican food in San Antonio is divine. And the Harley Davidson BBQ place in Vegas is pretty darn good. And since we don't yet have one, I've only ever eaten In 'N' Out on vacation and I LOVE that place.

Tropical Traditions Review and Giveaway

Okay, you should all know by now that I am a big fan of Tropical Traditions. I love their coconut oil, their honey, and their lotion, and now I have something new to add to the list! Their Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil for HAIR TREATMENT! Oh boy, is this stuff good!

Basically, this is their coconut oil on steroids. No, not really, but it’s like that! It’s their same coconut oil that you can use for skin and for cooking and for a myriad of other things, but the protein content is higher, making it A-MAZ-ING for your hair. Can I tell you a little background on my hair? I’ve been dying it since I was 14. I’ve been black, dark brown, fire engine red, hot pink, blue, auburn, gold, silver, platinum, and the blonde that I am now. I’ve been nearly every color of the rainbow, and at every length! But, blonde is where I chose to stay. I love being blonde. But you wanna know my deep, dark secret? I’m a natural redhead. Seriously. It’s super hard on my hair to go blonde when it’s naturally red! After I get my hair done, I can feel the strain it went through to get there. I typically treat my hair with protein at least every other week, sometimes every week if my hair is having a hard time. Back before this lovely coconut oil hair treatment came into my life, I was buying packs of protein treatment from the salon supply store. Now? I’m 100% for this Tropical Traditions hair treatment! If your hair is dry and/or damaged [not only from coloring, but hair also gets hurt from day-to-day issues like blow drying, straightening or curling, and even pollution!], or you feel like your hair could just use a good quenching, this is for you!

Buy it!
You can purchase this, or any of the great items from Tropical Traditions, by clicking here. Use my user ID [# 4992586] for a free Virgin Coconut Oil book with your purchase!

Happy Grandparents' Day!!

Did you know that today, September 13th, is National Grandparents' Day? If you are lucky enough to still have a grandparent, or even grandparents, in your life, do something today to tell them how much you love them. Need help? Visit grandparents.com, where you will find all sorts of crafts and activities you could do with your kids, to celebrate your and/or their grandparents.

Happy Grandparents' Day to Grandma and Grandpa Baum, to Grammie and Karl, and to Grandma Snyder. I love you all!

I had the amazing opportunity to grow up with two great-grandmas, who filled my life with so many memories and who I enjoyed and loved so much. I miss having you around! You were both so full of life and stories and fun.

And to my Grandpa Snyder. Not a single day goes by that I don't think of you. I miss you more than I can even express. You were taken from us so suddenly, and too soon. I still can't look at pictures of you without crying. I wish you were still here, I didn't get my fill of time with you. I love you!

Mothers' and Fathers' Day are such big events, and we should all do what we can to make today a big event too; Grandparents are worth it!

Misikko Review and Giveaway

I’ve already posted about the amazing Misikko [see it here], so you should pretty much be caught up on how awesome of a site it is, and how much I like them. All onboard now? Good! Onto the good stuff.

I got to review a Hana 1.5” ceramic flat iron from Misikko, and my hair has never been happier. Before this one, I had a ceramic-plated straightener, and the ceramic was starting to wear away in spots. It pulled my hair and hung onto the ends sometimes, and it just wasn’t all that pleasant of an experience. [Could be why I was always curling it instead!] The first time I straightened my hair with my new Hana, I was AMAZED. Literally, in awe of this tiny machine. I couldn’t even feel it running through my hair, and what I ended up with was frizz-free, straight all the way to the end, hair. For some of you, that may not be all that impressive, but my hair is in NO WAY straight by itself! I shower at night, and when I wake up, my naturally curly hair is all over the place. Not to mention, I have a square head [thanks, Dad] and I’ve got cowlicks at all four corners [again, thanks Dad]. Not only did this straightener, well, straighten my hair, but it made it smooth and I didn’t have funny spots where my hair stuck up because it also tamed my cowlicks! I am SOOOOOOOO impressed with the Hana flat iron. It also came with a heat proof mat/pouch [great for traveling!] and a metal case to put it in. Big time score!

Sweetly You Review

Sweetly You is a company that makes and sells bath and body products, but just as important – they also sell Jelly Belly jelly beans. How do you resist that? A nice bubble bath with a fantastic candy; sounds great to me!

One of my very favorite things about Sweetly You is their flavor selection. You have the typical flavors [note to all: yes, I understand it is not edible and should be called a scent, but just deal with my screwed up vocabulary, okay?] like creamy vanilla and royal pear, but they also have AWESOME flavors like root beer and Swiss Miss [yes, the cocoa] and raspberry chocolate drizzle. How in the world do you resist that?!

I got to review a few items from Sweetly You, and I like them all. My first item was the thick & rich bubble bath in Swiss Miss. Honestly, it was out of pure curiosity I ordered this flavor, but I love it! It literally smells like hot cocoa. And taking a bubble bath in it was a little weird, but I enjoyed it. And, it bubbles well.

My next item was the premium body lotion in royal pear. The flavor is VERY similar to the pear that VS used to carry and it totally reminds me of my grandma [which is a good thing, she doesn’t smell like an old lady, alright?]. The smell isn’t too strong, and the lotion is amazing. It’s super softening, and even 20 minutes after you put it on, you still feel soft and moisturized. I like it lots!

And last but not least, I got to try the foaming bath butter in Pink [modeled after VS Pink perfume]. I freaking love this stuff! Most exfoliators out there do not foam up like soap, so you basically use a ton of it if you want to do your whole body. This actually foams up, so it goes further and you feel clean after using it, instead of just feeling sanded like with some other products. The Pink smell is pretty light but still there.

Sweetly You is a great company, and they are local to me, so I feel awesome about buying from them! There are some flavors that I’m dying to try, so I will be making a purchase from them SOON. And, watch for a giveaway from Sweetly You in the coming weeks!

Fat Baby, Anyone?

So, a forum I belong to had a challenge to post a picture of ourselves as a baby. I conveniently had this one on my desk, so I scanned it, and now I want to share it with all of you!

That's my daddy holding me, and my beautiful mama in the background. I was a chunker, and that's actually a pretty skinny picture of me! I had fat rolls around my elbows and knees, wrists and ankles. I was a tank. I want to see some more baby pictures! Comment if you have one, and post about it! :D

Somersault Snack Co. Review

Somersault Snack Co. is a company turning the snacking world upside down! Here is a little more about them, from their site:

With our busy, on-the-go lives we were desperate for a healthy snack that we could grab anytime - something that would nourish and delight us. After searching high and low, our quest ended in despair, all we found were unhealthy belly fillers. Then we had an idea—mindful munching!

Off to the bakery we went. We knew we wanted our creation to be the perfect nourishing balance of protein, fiber and nutrition with a little crunch and scrumptious taste. Combining simple, naturally nutritious, tasty ingredients and baking them to perfection, we found ourselves with the first Somersault!

As each Somersault bounced out of the oven, these nuggets of roly-poly goodness baked with toasted grains, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and a delectable spice blend reminded us of simple delights—tumbling down a grassy hill, playtime until dark, and crickets chirping. Here, our love of healthy food and playtime merged into one.

Next time you enjoy a Somersault, we hope to bring you unexpected pleasure and a moment of mindful munching combined with a delectable blend of spice and absolutely nothing artificial.

I was able to review all three flavors of Somersault Snack Co. snacks – S.S. Sea Salt, Chez Cocoa, and Salty Pepper. I liked all three flavors, but the S.S. Sea Salt was my overall favorite! The Chez Cocoa reminds me of a certain cocoa cereal, but just a different texture. All of the snacks were pretty good. They are slightly crunchy on the outside but all soft on the inside. They have a texture similar to an oatmeal cookie, only less cookie and more oatmeal. They are nutritious and yummy and I dig them. My only dislike was that in each small package, there are two servings. I couldn’t only eat half the bag!! So, to help my self restraint, I would prefer only one serving in the bag. :)

My Birthday, Finally!

All in all, my birthday was a great day. I woke up late. I went to lunch at Happy Sumo with Shelb and Mom and we ate. And ate. And ate. And then ate cupcakes. [Come on, you had to know I would have cupcakes!] We shared between us the va-NIE-lla, key lime, dulce de leche and strawberry shortcake flavors from Sweet Tooth Fairy. YUMMMM. Then, I went home and did some grocery shopping [I actually enjoy grocery shopping] and figured out what we were going to do for the night. The Husband was super busy so he was in and out, but I had my and his family over for dinner [Wallaby's, thanks Mom!] and then dessert of... you guessed it, more cupcakes. But since it was my birthday, I took the easy route and bought them instead of making them. We got the ice cream cupcakes from Coldstone and they were pretty good!

And now the part you've been waiting for; the presents! I don't usually ask for much because really, I don't need much. But this year was AWESOME! I have a list of things I want and am saving for, and there were 6 things on it, but I got to mark off 2 of them! Super big thanks to my family.

At lunch, Shelby gave me the first half of her gift, which is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cool! She got me a 1948 vintage copy of my favorite book ever, Mr. Popper's Penguins. I am constantly using this book to talk the Husband into letting me raise penguins in our crawl space. No such luck yet, unfortunately.

Then the in-laws got me this little beauty [cross it off my list!], which I've already loaded with NIN, Metallica, A Perfect Circle, Rise Against, and a few others.

The second half of Shelby's gift was so rad - thanks to her, I am now the adoptive mommy of a leopard shark!! I love sharks, and I love my leopard cat, so mix the two and BAM! Coolest, most unique gift ever. I can't wait to go visit my new shark son. :D

And last, but most definitely not least, my newfound love. Let me give you a hint...

Do you know what it is? Any idea?

Gaaaah!!! Oh baby, it's a Kitchenaid in ORANGE!!! Oh, Kitchenaid, how do I love thee? And notice how it matches my cute little cupcake that my Mom bought for me awhile back? It couldn't feel more at home on my counter! This present was from my family and I ♥ it. [And if you couldn't guess, this was the second thing I got to cross off my list!]

So, all in all, you're jealous you don't have my super amazing family, aren't you? They are the cream of the crop, kids. As long as you don't mind a little [okay, a LOT] of crazy now and then.

Walks on the Beach with Angie Review and Giveaway

Walks on the Beach with Angie: A Father’s Story of Love describes the author’s relationship with his beloved daughter, Angela, who had cystic fibrosis. Don Warner and his wife, Linda, did everything they could to give their only child immeasurable love and the fullest life possible, all the while carrying out an aggressive treatment regimen to fight her fatal disease. Until she was 19, this honor student and cheerleader with a radiant personality kept the secret of her illness from her friends and the boys she dated. Carrying out multiple daily therapies and treatments with a quiet grace, Angie never asked for or expected special attention or sympathy.

During the final 86 days of her life, as Angie lay in an intensive care unit on a ventilator, the Warners were surrounded by loved ones, and a supportive extended family of kindred spirits they met in the hospital “Family Room.” The devastating grief and loss that Warner and his wife experience prompts him to search for meaning in his daughter’s death and ignites a powerful desire to create a lasting legacy in her honor. Walks on the Beach with Angie is part of this legacy.

To be honest, reading this book was hard for me. Not because it wasn’t good, but because it made me sad. I have a lot of compassion for handicapped people and reading a book entirely devoted to a little girl with Cystic Fibrosis broke my heart! Walks on the Beach with Angie is an incredible story of one family’s fight with Cystic Fibrosis, starting at her birth and ending with her death. I knew all along it would end that way but I bawled! It’s such an amazing story and Angie was such an amazing girl. I’m so glad I read it, but it was hard to get through. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone, but especially those dealing with a family member’s handicap or sickness or death.

Educating Esme Review

Welcome to Esme Raji Codell’s diary of her first year teaching in a Chicago public school. Fresh-mouthed and free-spirited, the irrepressible Madame Esme – as she prefers to be called – does the cha-cha during multiplication tables, roller-skates down the hallways, and puts on rousing performances with at-risk students in the library. While battling bureaucrats, gang members, abusive parents, and her own insecurities, this gifted young woman opens a window into a real-life classroom.

Educating Esme is not so much a book as it is a published journal, and I really enjoyed that fact! It catered to my ADHD like no typical book does, where I can just read for 3 minutes if that’s all I’ve got the attention span for. The journal is by Esme Codell and is about her being a teacher, from being hired for her first class through that first year. She is sharp-tongued and smart and witty, and I really enjoyed it. There is a bit of language in the book, but that only makes it feel more real to me. Some parts made me laugh, others made me want to be a teacher, and others made me glad I’m not one. I altogether really enjoyed reading this!

At the end of the book, there is a section with advice and helpful hints for Elementary teachers, so if you are a teacher I would definitely recommend picking this book up!

Minute Rice Review and Giveaway

I’m sure you all have heard of Minute Rice. Please, if you haven’t, pay good attention to what I’m about to tell you. Minute Rice is AWESOME. I am a big rice fan. I really like rice. Rice is good. Get my point? And when it comes to rice, Minute Rice is about as cool as it gets. White rice in 5 minutes, brown rice in 10; it’s easy peasy and quick to boot. Not only that, but they now offer these amazing little single-serving cups that are ready to serve, and come in great flavors like brown & wild rice, chicken rice and yellow rice! Just heat and eat. [I’m totally copyrighting that phrase! It’s pretty cool.]

I got to review some of their brown rice, as well as their brown rice ready-to-serve cups. The verdict? I love both. I am really happy with the ready-to-serve cups because often times for lunch I just want some rice with veggies, and sometimes I’m just too lazy to go through the rice process for ½ a serving of rice. The bowl is perfect sized and only takes a minute in the microwave to heat. I’m trying to [secretly] feed my family more healthy foods, and so I’ve switched over to brown rice when we have rice. The Minute Rice brown rice doesn’t taste too far off of the white rice, so if I mix it with a sauce or something, they have no idea. I highly suggest Minute Rice for any of your rice needs!

Buy it!
You can purchase any of the great items from Minute Rice at basically any grocery store near you.

Minute Rice has generously offered THREE of my super readers 3 coupons for and Minute Rice product up to 14 ounces, as well as 3 coupons for any Ready-To-Serve product [so each of the 3 winners gets six coupons]!

Singing the Song of Life Review

Singing the Song of Life is one woman’s symphony where songs are the stage that provides the inspiration for her to dance her dreams and shed her tears, while living with a terminal thing called life. It is the story of one woman overcoming life’s obstacles and triumphantly succeeding in life and love.

First, let me tell you that this book is not for the young ones. You read about it all in this book – adventure, friendship, marriage [and all the good things that come with it, which is why it’s not really for the young ones], divorce – it’s all wrapped up in this book! I really like that each chapter of the book [which falls in line with each chapter of her life] follows along the path of a song. One of my favorite things was at the beginning of each chapter, reading the song title for that chapter and trying to guess what was going to happen. It was quite an exciting book to read! From the highs, to the lows, back to the highs, it was fun.

The website for this book isn’t quite built yet, but be sure to bookmark it so you can check it out when it’s all done. Click here for the site.
