Silverstein & Me: A Memoir is a book written by Marv Gold, a lifetime friend of Shel Silverstein. From childhood to the Playboy era to death, you will learn about Silverstein’s hobbies and interests, escapades and jobs. You may like it, and you may not. Don’t come read the book expecting a Shel Silverstein poem; come expecting to learn about the man behind the poems and cartoons. Thanks to AME, I was able to review Silverstein & Me: A Memoir. Shel Silverstein will always be one of my favorite authors. There are a few of his books that I checked out from the library more times than I can remember, and there was always at least one of his books in my Book Club orders. That said, I couldn’t wait to read this memoir. I didn’t expect it to be his poetry or his cartoons, and I think that helped. I learned that he was pretty anti-social. He drew cartoons for Playboy. None of what I expected, but it makes the writing I love that much more sincere. I liked this book for what it was – a look into one of my favorite authors’ lives.

ReplyDeleteWe love his poetry. My 5 year old is a huge fan of his books! Over at the site I learned that Shel wrote 700 cartoons and 800 songs as well. That's amazing!
