The Mother-In-Law’s Manual Review and Giveaway

The Mother-In-Law’s Manual: Proven Strategies for Creating Healthy Relationships with Married Children by Susan Lieberman is about mothers-in-law and for mothers-in-law, but it’s also for anyone else who wants to better understand the mother-in-law dynamic.

The Mother-In-Law’s Manual talks about why so many well-intended mothers sometimes miss the mark, how expectations, conscious and unconscious, can lead them astray and how their assumptions can result in painful mistakes.

Thanks to AME, I was able to review this book. You guys probably are wondering why I would review a book like this, as only having one 8-year old, I am not a mother-in-law. Well, I chose to review this book to try to better understand the MIL perspective. Anyone close to me probably realizes that my relationship with my MIL is less than stellar. She is outspoken and needs to push her opinion or her way of doing things on other people. However, when faced with someone just as outspoken, it infuriates her. Enter: me. Outspoken and not afraid to tell it like it is. In fact, my MIL is currently not speaking with me because I told her it was dumb of her to give Punk yogurt when she had the flu. Duh – dairy + acidic state in the tummy = NO BUENO. And that was after Punk threw up the yogurt all over my favorite chair and my carpet and my bathroom and my shower curtain…

Anyway! This book was helpful in letting me into the mindset of the MIL and trying to “walk in her shoes”, if you will. I did enjoy reading the book from the perspective of the opposite side of the tracks. Sometimes I still think I’d prefer enter a cage match than deal with her, but who doesn’t have that feeling sometimes? Right?
